I am researching the family of Thomas hOLLELY (my g-g-g-grandfather)who
came to Brooklyn with 5 of his sons and 2 daughters in 1838. Thomas was a
silversmith in Sheffield, England and became a woodturner or cabinet maker in
this country. He and his family lived on Sands Street. The Coleman School (a
private school) was also on this street). While we have been able to follow
the sons to the present day (or until their line died out), we have had less
success with the wives of the sons or the daughters. I am going to give some
addressees to give an idea of the location and then some names. If anything
sounds familiar let me know. The area is in what is now part of
Bedford-Stuyvesant and is near what was known as "little Norway". Besides
Sands Street,there is 1 Spencer Court, 829 Bedford Street (1870 census),477
DeKalb, 68 Hull, 478 Park Avenue,42 Clinton, 89 Putnam Avenue. More in what
was known as "Little Norway" was 386 49th Street. While most were
self-employed later generations worked for The Ansonia Clock factory.

There seemed to be a group of English families who lived
near each other and were friends (may have known each other in
England). One family was the Labon family-this we have info on as their
daughter, Maria, became my g-g-grandmother. Three others show up as
naturalization witnesses-William Appleyard, William Timstall and William
Hewitt(approx.1860).
Now for names: LUCY PRIN? married Edwin Hollely approx.1860and had 5 daughters
One daughter, Ann Isabelle, married a ROBERT DAWSON? Another daughter Emma
married a PETER SCHMIDT(might have married as Smith) in early 1890s. Had son
George in 1895 and Peter died shortly after.

William Hollely had 2 wives and no children. He married ANN or BRIDGET
SHERIDAN about 1860 and after her death married MARY STONY(Approx.1873).
MARY JANE MORAN SPIERS was the stepdaughter of John Hollely-daughter of
Francis Coleman and William Moran. Looking for SPIERS connection. She was
born about 1860 and died in 1920.
Joseph C. married the sister-in-law of Howell, who was an ex-mayor of
Broolyn..Her last name was TUNSIL. She died in 1880.They had one child
Joseph,Jr. who married and had a daughter., KATE. Joseph Sr. married EMMA
L.COOK after the death of his first wife.
.
Another problem is two pictures that may or may not be of the family. They
were found among the papers of a relative but might have been from the other
side of his family. The only hint is they seen to have the photographers
name on them- Duryea-Brooklyn. Any idea as to finding out when he was in
business?
If anything sounds familiar, please let me know-or if you know how I could
find information about the listed names.
