Michael,
The NYC Municipal Archives only have marriage records up to 1937 even though the law states that they could go for another few years, I think it's 50. But apparently, due to budget restraints and manpower, the city is not microfilming the later certificates. Hopefully you will have luck with the Department of Health.
The death index is not online and has to be viewed in the Archives. You can also order the microfilm from the LDS at a reasonable price.
