Gary, can you provide any alternative spellings (for Apel) that you might have come across in your research? Or might he have gone by "Gus" or "Will?" I have access to several Civil War databases through ancestry.com, but searching on the name you provided doesn't result in any apparent matches.

Do you know when he died? Do you already have his obituary? Obits sometimes mention the regiment & company in which a veteran served.
