The City websites have only the current information - I don't know how you can easily find out if 16 Scholes St. was a valid address 60 years ago.

You may have to find a repository that has Sanborn or Belcher Hyde real estate & insurance atlases for that part of Brooklyn in the 1940 period - perhaps the Brooklyn collection at Brooklyn Public Library or the Map Division at the New York Public Library's Research Library (5th Ave. & 42d St., Manhattan).
