Perhaps John and Margreth's death certificates will list their parents' names, or years of immigration, or marriage date, and then you can work backwards from there?
The 1860 Census may be a little more tricky to search. Ancestry's index of that year isn't complete yet. Genealogy.com does have a searchable index by head-of-household only, but it doesn't give you any search options to play around with.
I did find a John & Margretha Winters living in Syracuse, NY in 1860. You can browse the page on Ancestry. It is Onondaga County, Syracuse Ward 2, image 50 of 101. The ages and children's names are close. It may be worth looking in to.
