Great ! ! ! I lived at 1354 Hancock and went to P.S 106 about four blocksaway, I believe between Knickerbocker and Wilson Avenues, possibly Cornelia Street. (Its been a long time) The name of P.S. 106 was Edward Everett Hale. Saint Martin of Tours also has a huge Catholic school on Knickerbocker Avenue directly across from the church. As a child I watched the demolition and construction of the school. My Grandmother attended bingo regularly in the school auditorium. Father "O" (Oppenheimer) what THE man of the church with the children. He had a wonderful relationship with the children. In the 1960's four of my friends were attacked with machetes knives by a gang in the Halsey Street Park, which was the public park that adjoined St. Martin of Tours. They made it to the school auditorim where they knew Father"O" was at the Bingo Hall. Father "O" tended them until the ambulances arrived. One died the next day but the rest went on with useful productive lives. !
Father "O" was however the "Black Eye" of St. Martin of Tours, because as I can remember when he would go to the beach, he would dress in shorts and have a six-pack in a cooler. I did not attend this church but a good many of the people I grew-up with did. If I can help - - let me know. - Janet
