Message Board Post:
I am researching a family of Griffins who evidently were native to Suffolk Co. NY, but were living somewhere in Brooklyn during the time period of 1817 to 1839. My great-great grandmother, Hannah A. Griffin, was described in her obituary as having joined the Methodist church around 1832 and being very active. Her father's name was John C. Griffin; her mother was also named Hannah. The only John Griffin I have been able to find on the census records is a reference in 1830 to a John Griffin in Bushwick. My question is: does anyone know what Methodist church or churches existed in this area back during this period. I find references to the "Sands Street Methodist Church," which seems to have been the major Methodist Church, but were there others? Hannah A. Griffin married a John L. Griffin, a seaman from Connecticut b. March, 1815, whose family I have been unable to trace. Would his profession have been likely to have brought him to Brooklyn? I am very unfamiliar with B!
rooklyn's history, but would like to see if I can go farther beyond John L. and Hannah's generation back into Connecticut and Suffolk Co., and am looking for some hints as to where to find relevant records.
Thanks for any help.
