I am trying to find government records about my ancestor: John CAVERLEY / CAVERLY. According to the 1865 census of Kings Co. Brooklyn, NY he entered military service on Jan. 30, 1865. The census states the location of his entry was Portsmouth. It does not specify if this location was at Portsmouth Naval base in New Hampshire. Were there other Naval bases called or named Portsmouth in 1865, at various locations? His "First Rank" was listed as Fireman. Where he was listed in order of birth, with the rest of his family, he was listed as being "at sea". Hence my assumption he was in the Navy. It is further stated that he was discharged after serving 6 months, due to "Health permanently impaired" from exposure and consumption. I have been unable to find the name John (variously spelled) CAVERLEY / CAVERLY so far in any Veterans lists on line. I did find a John C. Caverley who was in the infantry from NY but his death date is earlier than 1865. Any help, suggestions or !
lookups will be most deeply appreciated. Thank you, Russ Wood
