My Robert WINKLER appears to have been born at the age of 34 complete with a
wife and three children. I find the family on the 1870 census as
Robert WINKLER 34 Engineer b. NY
Mary 33 b. NY $6000
Albert 11 b.NY
Joseph 9 b. NY
Walter 4 b.NY

In 1880, Mary lists herself as a widow, and Joseph and Walter are still at
home, so it appears that Robert died between 1870 and 1880 (I can't be
sure - the women on this side of the family are famous for calling
themselves widows when they are not). The 1880 also tells me that Mary's
parents were both born in France. I have great information after 1880 for
the children, although I have not found Mary's death, as yet. I did not
find her in 1900 or 1910.

If anyone has access to mid-decade census - could you please see if you can
tell if Robert was still alive in 1875? The Vital Records Dept only allows
5 years for each search before you have to pay for a new search.

I believe I have checked every Winkler or variation in the 1860 and 1850
censuses for the state of New York, and there is no trace of Robert anywhere
(for 1860, I also searched under Mary and Albert and no appropriate
matches). I have checked the Directories on the Brooklyn site, and no sign
of him in the pertinent years. I do not find him in any of the listed
cemeteries, although I'm pretty sure he would be buried (lol).

Any suggestions for further digging would be greatly appreciated....
