The date of death in your query is August 1982. Whenever I see a death date without the day of the month, I am reminded of the online Social Security Death Index.

Max is on the SSDI with the dates you have posted. I assume you know this.

Anyone desiring the maiden name of the mother of a decedent on the SSDI can obtain it from a copy of the SS-5 form which was filled out by the person when he applied for a Social Security card. It costs $27.00 and takes several months to obtain such copy. For Max's SS-5, click on this :

http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi?letter=y&lastname=SCHWARTZ&firstname=MAX&ssn=083-07-2770&birth=17+May+1909&death=Aug+1982&middlename=&namesiffix=

Print out the letter generated by RootsWeb, then mail it in with the fee to the Social Security Administration.

There is a printed Honor Roll of Jewish men and women who received medals or died serving in the military of the United States during World War II. It's in volume two of "American Jews in World War II," compiled by the Bureau of War Records of the National Jewish Welfare Board, published in 1947.

There are several military men from New York City named Max SCHWARTZ on page 435 of volume two. One, with the rank of S/Sgt., was in the Army, came from New York City, and received a Purple Heart. Another from New York City and three from Brooklyn [also in New York City] all had ranks lower than sergeant. There is no personal information for any of these men---other than the implication that those coming from New York City lived in the borough of Manhattan. At the time, the borough of The Bronx was within the post office district known as New York.
