If I can add my two cents...

Much of the basic genealogical records at NYPL can be found elsewhere, however with something like 1000 miles of shelf space it is possible to find rare books which can help you fill-out your understanding of your ancestor's life.
I've found my 2great uncle's WWI Unit's history, printed in 1920 for the 1000 men who served together; a history of a small town in Vermont which never had more than 2000 residents; and family histories which the author only printed 100 copies of nearly 100 years ago. Not to mention the thrill I got when I found Horace Greeley had autographed the book I was reading. And these were not even in what the library considers the "Rare Book" collection.
If your'e going to have the time, search the catnyp catolog
for topics which may help your research, they are bound to have some books on the subject.
I mean the 1880 census can tell you your ancestor was a Furrier in Atlanta. The NYPL might give you an understanding of what his life was really like.
Good Luck.
John
