Can you be a little more specific about the time frame? 100-year-old mystery could suggest that she was born 100 years ago or that she died 100 years ago.
It's vital to begin with fact that are known and documented. For example, you say this woman is your grandmother. Therefore, one of your parents must be the child of this woman. When and where was your parent born? If you get his/her birth record, it very well may indicate May's maiden name.
If getting the birth record is problematic, then if your parent who was May's child is deceased, you might try to get his/her death record to see if the mother's maiden name is listed. If your parent who was May's child knew May's maiden name, it would be listed on your parent's SS5 application for social security (if the time frame is appropriate).
