Subject: HOBBY-WHITE marriage: identifying primary record
Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 15:00:43 +1000
I have William HOBBY (son of Squire HOBBY and Cynthia HUSTED) marrying
Mary Ann WHITE (daughter of William WHITE and Mary Ann ???)
Mary Ann WHITE's record in my gedcom can be found at
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hobby&id=I11
From a couple of sources, I can find secondary records for the marriage
Marriages from the New York Post, 1801-1890
Publication: NEHGS website
Text: 1843 1/7 Thursday, 5th inst. Rev.C.Green, WILLIAM HOBBY to MARY A
WHITE, both of this City.
I am trying to identify the primary source of the record, and hoping
that it may contain information to work back the WHITE family line, eg.
witnesses. My indication of best place to start is Brooklyn as that is
where they were later living before they emigrated to Australia in 1850s.
QUESTION 1. How would I identify the church or place of marriage with
the above information?
About the only family line that I can associate this Mary Ann WHITE with
is William WHITE m. Mary GREEN in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., NY, and
most research for this family only shows five sons born to the marriage,
though there is an iota of chance if you look at that family residence
in 1840 census but ignore 1830 census. The reference to the Revd Green
piques my interest though of course it may be coincidence, I would like
to further check out whether Mary Green and Revd C Green may be related.
QUESTION 2. Is there any available reference material to identify who
Revd Green was, and his background or the background for religious
training at that time?
Naturally if anyone else has suggestions, information or direction for
me to take, I am most willing to listen. NYC is not my usual haunt for
research, so I am a little naive to the local research techniques and
intricacies.
