I thought I'd check the 1880 census for this family, just to see (you may have done this already) and I think I found them under the name Davidson.
New York, New York (called "New York City - Greater" in the census database), ED 293, pg. 45 (within the ED) or page 363A
109 33rd St. (no East or West given)
Charles Davidson, 36, b. NY, parents b. NY, no occupation
Eva Davidson, 21, b. RI, parents b. RI
Bertha, 7 mos old, b. Nov (1879), called "daugher, b. NY, father b. NY, mother b. RI
next door are Benjamin, 28, and wife Augusta Davidson, but Benjamin was b. Scotland, parents b. Scotland
I looked around all the ancestry.com databases and the other censuses to see if anything more would turn up on Davidson and I didn't find anything solid. You might see if there is a birth cert. for Bertha and a m. cert. for Charles and Eva. I wonder if Charles died soon after 1880, then Eva married Mr. Hardcastle, and Bertha adopted his last name. You probably noticed that the 1900 census says Charles and Eva Rogers were married 2 years, but Hazel Rogers is 6. There's more than the obvious going on here.
Good luck!
Doug
