I went to look at the US Census. In 1900 Matthew was a teacher. He was living with his wife, Jessie, on Jefferson St, Brooklyn.

In the 1920 census, he does not appear but we find Jessie living with her father, Benjamin Griffin, in Clarkstown, NY. Both are listed as being married and not widow or widower.
