November 10th is a Federal Holiday celebrating our Veterans! In November, the
National Archives will pay special tribute to our nation's troops - past and
present. Month-long special events, programs, exhibits, speakers, and films will
honor the brave men and women who have fought for our country. At the National
Archives, we take special pride in our role in protecting the records of those
who have protected our nation. We hold individual service records and unit
records
from the American Revolution to the Gulf War, covering all branches of military
service.

Join us on November 10 from 10:00-3:00 as the National Archives - New York
celebrates Veterans with an Open House and Memorial Lecture. The
day's activities will include ongoing staff-assisted, hands-on Military Records
research for Veterans and their families, who can learn how to request DD214
forms
and other personnel records. We will also show patriotic documentary films from
our Motion Picture Division, and guests can view exhibits including select files
of
famous military personnel records. At 12:30, a special memorial talk "Out of
Fire and Valor: The War Memorials of New York From the Revolution to 9/11" will
be presented by our guest speaker - Cal Snyder, Historian, Photographer, and
Vietnam Veteran. Mr. Snyder will use highlights from his book to reflect on the
pantheon of American valor and sacrifice and roughly 400 war memorials located
in the five boroughs. All events are free, but registration is required for the

November 14 -- Finding Family: Using Military Records at NARA
Learn about the variety of Military Records stored at the National Archives and
where to locate them as you research your family military history. This lecture
will
run from 12:30-1:30 pm. It is part of our brown bag series, so feel free to
bring your own lunch.

November 16 - Educator Reception and Open House at Federal Hall
Join us at Federal Hall National Memorial between 4:30-5:30pm to learn about the
December 15th School Days Program at Federal Hall. Representatives from
NPS and NARA will provide an overview of the programs and give tours of the
recently renovated Federal Hall (the building was closed in 2004 and has
undergone $16 million of renovations. Federal Hall reopened to the public on
October 6). Registration is required.

November 30 -- Teaching With Documents: Document Analysis
Educators: Come learn about the variety of primary sources available at the
National Archives. The workshop includes hands-on activities to demonstrate
analysis
and critical thinking using textual, photographic, and sound and audio visual
records. The workshop runs from 4:30-6:30pm. Registration is required.

Save the Date!
The National Archives and National Park Service Host Special Four-Day Display of
Original New York Bill of Rights Ratification.
The original Ratification of the U.S. Bill of Rights by the State of New York
will be on view in Federal Hall for four days beginning December 14. The Federal
Hall
National Memorial, operated by the National Park Service, was the site of the
nation's first federal seat and the drafting of the U.S. Bill of Rights. The
free display is
the public centerpiece of several events marking a new partnership between the
National Park Service and the National Archives and Records Administration. The
Ratification is among the federal records the National Archives holds in trust
for the American people; this will be the first time it has been exhibited in
New York
City since it was signed on March 27, 1790. Other important documents will also
be on view as part of a related National Archives exhibit. There will also be
interpreters in period costume, children's activities, free tours of the
building, and onsite discussions of the Ratification document. A number of
additional programs
and exhibits will be ongoing.
You can participate in these events at Federal Hall National Memorial, 26 Wall
Street, New York, NY, on the following dates:
Thursday, December 14, 1:00 pm-5:00pm
*Friday, December 15 (Bill of Rights Day), 9:00am-7:00 pm
(*Educators, please note that programs on Friday, 10:00am-2:00pm, are geared for
school groups.)
Saturday and Sunday, December 16 and 17, 9:00am-5:00pmThe exhibits and related
public activities are free and open to the public!

Ongoing Exhibits:
Famous Military Personnel Records
Facsimile copies of select files from the National Personnel Records Center in
St. Louis, MO, will profile "persons of exceptional prominence"; documents
featuring
former Presidents, famous military leaders, celebrities, entertainers, and
professional athletes who served in the military will be on display. Among the
individuals
whose files will be highlighted are: Charles Lindbergh, Joe Louis, Steve
McQueen, Clark Gable, Elvis Presley, Alvin York, Douglas MacArthur, John F.
Kennedy,
Humphrey Bogart, Jackie Robinson, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Ongoing until
December 2006.

Veterans at Work: The U.S. Customs House:
View select documents of former Civil War veterans and their work at the U.S.
Custom's House, NY.

Photographs From the National Archives: New York People and Places
This exhibit chronicles changing views of the city's people and landscape. From
children playing leapfrog to the hardships of immigrant life to displaced
workers in
the Great Depression, the scenes represented here are a candid and intimate
portrait of our modern city in the making. Ongoing through the spring of 2007.
