I agree with some of what Noelle wrote. My grandparents are buried there. Its a big place and the cemetery is working to fix up the place. I wouldn't walk in there because it is too big. The staff is very helpful and you can get your families' information at the desk or you could write and get it (for a fee, I think). They have a detailed maps. But I would strongly suggest going in by car. As for the area around the cemetery, I come in the back way, from the Myrtle Ave. Its easier for me where I get off the Belt Parkway. The area is ok. If you are not from Queens it might be a little intimidating but some of the people are nice. Nice little stores. there's a great bakery along there on Mrytle, I forgot the name though.
