Subject: [NYMADISO] Qualifications for lawyer in 1860?
Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2002 13:16:04 EST
On the 1860 Census of Madison Co., city of Fenner my ancestor Ira R NICHOLS
lists his occupation as a Lawyer. I was wondering if anyone could tell me
what qualifications were necessary to practice law in the 1860's. How much
education did a person have to have ? Did they need a license from the
state? Ira's son Omar A NICHOLS , age 19 also lists his occupation as a
Lawyer. I don't think I would want a 19 yr old handling my legal affairs!
Thank you
Barbara Nichols
