Which is, if you will pardon the pun, monumentally stupid of them.
When you abbreviate you lose information. This particular cemetery is
not of interest to me, but if I had my choice between a transcription
of a cemetery of interest in some standardized format that
abbreviates, edits, and otherwise alters the actual headstone texts
and one in a non-standardized format that preserves the texts verbatim
I would unhesitatingly prefer the latter.
