Hi Ardis:

I couldn't agree with you more. I too made a trip to Rochester, my father's
hometown before they moved to Chicago. The Rundel library was great. I
would urge anyone who can do it to make the trip. You'll find all the city
directories, high school year books, family genealogies, maps, old phone
books, the newspaper index Ardis refers to, New York State census', and
across the street at the main library, there is a fantastic microfilm reading
room with the complete daily newspaper archives for both of Rochester's
papers. My visit was very productive. (budget lots of time if you can go)

The two major cemetary's in the Rochester area are Mt Hope and Holy
Sepulcure. HS is a Catholic facility and MH is non-denominational. HS has a
computerized lookup which you can do yourself. (It has touch screen no
less...) If you find a grave site of interest it then will print out a map of
how to get to the exact site. HS, and MH for that matter are HUGE, the map
feature is a necessity. If you can visit Rochester, you'll want to stop by
these potential resources.

Good hunting everyone

I spent two wonderful days in this Rochester library on my only visit to my
father's hometown. It had the best local genealogy collection I have ever
seen.

In addition to compiled genealogies of local families and a complete run of
city directories, some of the most useful resources I found were:

Unit histories of New York Civil War military organizations

Index to the local newspapers (where else could I have learned that my
grandmother had been shot in the knee by a stray bullet back in 1895?)

Local maps -- one of the more interesting sets of maps showed the actual
footprints of buildings early in this century. That provoked some
interesting talks with my father as he reminisced about things that had
happened on this porch, in the bend of that building, between the facing
windows of his home and the house next door. These maps also were a quick
and easy way to get an idea of the churches, schools, and businesses in his
neighborhood.
