Dear Sharon, Dutchtown is still there. I was born there. The house my
grandfather built in the late 1800's is still there. I have a little book
printed in 1946. The name is ROCHESTER SKETCHBOOK by Arch Merrill and
reprinted from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
Now I am quoting starting on Page 158:
The political upheaval of the late 1840's sent thousands of Germans to
America's shores. Many settled in Rochester............They set up scattered
colonies on the fringes of the city.............One such neighborhood became
known as Dutchtown. It was bounded loosely by Lyell Avenue, Hague Street, Jay
and the old canal.........
In old Dutchtown was born a tradition that endures. It is in the world of
competitive sports. I doubt if any neighborhood in any city ever contributed
more star atheletes. They were the products of the
sandlots......................
Dutchtown also basked in the glory of its mighty football teams, the old
SCALPERS and in later days the Russers. The Scalper lineup once included a
Joe O"Brien who became a congressman and a George Nier who became a city
public safety commissioner .
This is a great little book. Don't know if it is in the library.
What names are you researching? Let me hear from you.
