Greetings Listers!
Yesterday I took out of the local library "The History of Monroe County,
1877" and will have it for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, the index to the book
does not circulate, but would be willing to do look-ups for Civil War
veterans if you know the town as they are listed by the town the soldier came
from- i.e. Hamlin, Sweden, Rochester, Ogden, etc. Some of the references are
just the name, most have the unit joined, some have enlistment dates, some
have rank, a few have if they died or were captured.
Also could do look-ups from "Historical Record of Our Patrons" listed first
by Rochester or town and then by occupation- i.e. Attorneys, Blacksmiths,
Farmers, Ministers, etc. These listings generally give the address of the
business and generally the owner's birthplace and date. Could look-up a
surname if you know the town.
As I said, I don't have the index so "my grandfather's name was John Doe, is
he in there" would be impossible to know. If your ancestor was a town
founder for a specific town, there are biographies and pictures of some of
them. Would be happy to copy those at cost if you'd like.
Please put "History of Monroe County Look-up" in the subject line.
