Is it possible that this was Brockport Normal School? My ancestors
went there. I checked my dictionary for "normal school", and the
definition they gave was a two-year school for the preparation of
elementary school teachers. The Brockport Normal School was a
five-story institution erected in 1829 by the citizens of Brockport.
My question - did one go to normal school after finishing 8th grade?
I seem to recall accounts of 19th century elementary school teachers
being very young - 17 years of age or so - which might indicate an
entry into normal school after 8th grade.
In any event, Brockport Normal School is now part of SUNY Brockport.
