BLED TO DEATH.
Peculiar Accident Results Fatally to an Allegany Man.
ANGELICA, May 21. — Joseph ARNER of Belmont, the county seat of
Allegany, met with an accident at Johnsonburg, Pa., which cost him his
life. A chisel which he had in his hand was caught in the turning shaft
while his attention was called to another part of the machinery. The
chisel was knocked from his hand, striking him in the chest, near the
neck, with so much force as to cut the main artery and in two minutes he
was dead from the loss of blood. The body was brought to Belmont and
buried.

E. M. OLNEY of Rushford was chasing his cows of the yard when he ran
into a clothes line, which threw his back onto the ground in such a
forcible manner as to break his collar bone.

Laura GLEASON, a pupil of the school at Marshall, was playing with the
other scholars and in some manner got hit on the head with a stick of
wood, which rendered her unconscious for a time.

Late Allegany county deaths are as follows: Mrs. Margaret CORCORAN of
Cuba, aged 46 years; Jane STANLEY of Allen, died at Craig Colony for
Epileptics; Rollin HOUGHTON of Houghton, died at Chillicothe, Ill,;
Ransom TUTTLE of Cuba, aged 74 years died at Anaconda, Mont.; Charles H.
BLOSSOM of Cuba, aged 57 years; Mrs. C.J. HARDAWAY of Rushford, aged 52
years; Mrs. Lucy FERREE of Belfast, aged 83 years; Charles MINER of
Hume, died at Hudson, Wis., aged 68 years; Lloyd WILLIAMS of Belmont,
age unknown.

Memorial Day in Penfield.
PENFIELD. May 21. — Preparations have been made for the proper
observance of Decoration Day in Penfield. Committees have been
appointed to secure speakers, conveyance, &c. Rev. Mrs. McLATCHY,
pastor of the F.W. Baptist Church of East Penfield, will deliver the
memorial sermon at the M.E. Church next Sunday evening, May 27th.
George TILLOTSON died Saturday night at his late residence,
aged 84 years. Deceased had lived alone for a long time. Funeral this
afternoon.

James B. CARTER died Saturday at his home on Black Brook road,
aged 74 years. He was born in Denmark, Lewis county, but nearly all his
life had been spent in this town. He is survived by his wife and two
sisters, Misses Mary.........

GENEVA, New York
........ O'BRIEN, Delegates to the county convention were named as
follows: Daniel E. MOORE, Stephen H. PARKER, Thomas D. ROGERS, D.J. Van
AUKEN, Thomas H. SWEENEY, Edward J. MULCAHY, Patrick F. C. DURKIN, L.J.
QUINLAN and G.J. KELLEHER. The delegates will meet Friday night to fill
any vacancies that may occur.
Mrs. Mary Fisher MORRIS, aged 77 years, died on the Black
Diamond Express Saturday night. She was stricken with heart disease.
Mrs. MORRIS was on her way from Pottsville, Pa., to visit her daughter,
Mrs. John B. CHURCH of South Main street, this city. She was
accompanied by Mr. CHURCH. The remains were taken to the Church
residence. Funeral in Pottsville. The deceased was well known here.
The death of Hadley Norton ROSE occurred yesterday at the City
Hospital. The deceased was about 65 years old. He had been ill for
several weeks. His home was in Hagerstown, Md., but he had made Geneva
his home the past year and had visited this city nearly every summer for
many years past. He had a number of relatives living here. Funeral at
3 o'clock this afternoon from Trinity Church.

PENN YAN
The fire which so seriously damaged the house of D.O. TRIMMER
on Saturday morning, is still much of a mystery as regards origin. No
fire had been in the building that day, except a gas fire in the
kitchen, and that was not then burning. Mrs. TRIMMER and daughters were
below stairs, and one had cause to go above and open the garret door,
when flames burst out. The slate roof and the intricate construction of
the garret made it a most obstinate fire to handle, and before it could
be controlled the entire upper story was gutted. Mr. TRIMMER was not in
town. The house was insured for $2,000, and the contents for $1,000.

Sarah E. COREY died at her home in Larzelere's Hollow Friday from heart
disease, aged 72 years.

The annual prize speaking of the students of the Penn Yan
Academy was held on Friday evening. The number of contestants was
reduced to seven, Miss Castella HOBART being unable to take part on
account of the serious injuries received by her father in a runaway that
afternoon. The judges appointed were Dean Edward C. HAYES of Keuka
College, Principal Charles E. EVANS of the Elmira High School, and
Principal Samuel S. JOHNSON of the Watkins High School. The prizes were
two $10 gold pieces to those winning the first prizes, and $5 gold
pieces to those winning seconds. Theye were awarded as follows: Ladies'
first prize, Miss Carrie PRATT, "Tobe's Monument;" second prize, Miss
Mabel LeCLAIRE, "Fortunes of War." Gentlemen, first prize, Dwight
ROGERS, "The Curse of Regulus;" second prize, James M. LOWNE, Jr.,
extract from speech of Senator BEVERIDGE.

the state entomologist.

Two Deaths in Newark.
NEWARK, May 21. — Miss Sarah HOGAN died at the home of her
aunt, Mrs. Richard WADE, on Van Buren street, Sunday, aged 20 years.
She had resided here about eight months, formerly living in Syracuse.
She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. John MARTELL, of Syracuse, Miss
Mary HOGAN of Syracuse, and an unmarried sister living in the west.
Funeral to-morrow morning at 8:30. The remains will be taken to
Syracuse for interment.
Hilliard B. CRAIG, aged 85 years, died yesterday. He is
survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elmer WEST of Newark, and Mrs. William
RANDALL of Port Gibson. Funeral at Mrs. WEST's Siegrist street, at 1:30
o'clock Tuesday.
Mrs. Alonzo DODD died at her home, Palmyra street, last evening
aged 67 years, after a week's illness. She was a lifelong resident of
the town of Arcadia and had resided in Newark eight years. She is
survived by her husband and three sons. Frank and Fred of Newark and
William of Sodus Center; two sisters, Mrs. Charles WRIGHT of Joy and
Mrs. George BEAM of Baltimore; and by a brother, Charles STONE of
Fairville. The funeral will be held at the house at 2:30 Wednesday,
with interment in the East Newark cemetery.
D.Z. WINANS died at his home, East Maple avenue, yesterday, of
consumption, after an illness of six months, aged 56 years. He was born
in Yates county and removed to this village six years ago. Deceased was
a nephew of the late Mrs. O.H. ALLERTON. His survivors are a widow,
father, three sisters, Mrs. Della CHURCH of Rochester, Mrs. Kate HAYES
of Penn Yan and Mrs. DORA WOOD of Rochester. Funeral will be held at
Penn Yan, at the home of his father, Wednesday, at 3 o'clock.

Died at Cottage City.
EAST BLOOMFIELD, May 21. — E.E. RIGNEY, Peter NEINEN and David
THOMAS were elected delegates to the county convention at Canandaigua,
May 26th.
Charles WILBY, a young former resident of the town, died at Cottage
City (Canandaigua Lake), after an illness of two days, Thursday. He was
25 years old.

HOLT — In Webster, Sunday, May 20, 1900, Sabrah A. CURTICE, wife of the
late Horace HOLT, aged 80 years.
— Funeral from her late residence Wednesday at 1 p.m.

CANDEE — Entered into rest, Lois Ashton COWLES, beloved wife of Herbert
G. CANDEE, at Chicago, May 19, 1900.
— Funeral Tuesday at 3:30 o'clock from the house. Burial private.

GREGG — In this city, on Sunday, May 20, 1900, Martha FRAZER, wife of
the late Mahon GREGG, aged 75 years.
— Funeral from the family residence, corner Jones street and Fulton
avenue, on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Horace BAYLESS.
Special Dispatch to Union and Advertiser.
HONEYOYE FALLS, May 21. — The death of Horace BAYLESS occurred
at his late home on North Main street yesterday afternoon after a brief
illness of pneumonia. Deceased was 63 years of age and is survived by a
widow and one daughter, Mrs. Dr. WOODRUFF. He was a member of the
Fiftieth Regiment, New York Engineers, and served faithfully throughout
the war. He was also a member of Lewis Gates Post, G.A.R., Honeoye
Falls. The funeral services, which will be conducted by Rev. A.J.
FURNNELL, will be held at the family residence to-morrow afternoon at 4
o'clock.

Accident at Mt. Morris.
MT. MORRIS, May 21. — While climbing aloft in the White salt
block, just north of this place, Saturday, Master Eddie LONG, son of
John LONG, of this place, slipped and fell a considerable distance,
breaking his left arm and receiving a concussion of the brain. A boy
with him also fell but was not injured. Dr. DODGE of this place, was
called and says the LONG boy will recover.
