Ireland was occupied by the English till about 80 years ago. As a British
subject, an irishman to go to Canada which also was occupied by England
without special papers or whatever. The passage cost was also cheaper and
once in Canada it was just a walk over the frozen St Lawrence or a short
row. Irish in the 1800s were the wetbacks and the St Lawrence River was the
old time Rio Grande. Today the St. Lawrence is still used by illegal
immigrants from China. Canadian immigration laws are not real strict and it
is easier to get into Canada than directly into the USA. This has been
exploited in the past few years by terrorist groups as well. Remember
learning in school that Canada and the US are such good neighbors that it
has the longest unguarded border in the world. James Cooros
