I have since found out that Louisa Dupuis/Wells was also known as "Louisa Tetro (Tetreault)" AND that she was previously married in 1852 to Oliver Lauer/Lower who abandoned her and their ten children. He went to the Civil War without telling her and left her and the kids to go to the Canton Poorhouse. Her kids were given away; daughter Hortensia went to live with Charles and Verlida Severance of Pierpont in the 1870 census. Louisa assumed him dead and she ran away from the poorhouse to live with her cousins Lena Gadbaw and Kate LaPlant (LaPlant is her married name and she was also a cousin of Charles St. Onge). She is also connected somehow with Oliver Fersha and family and Francis Larock and family, all of Ogdensburg. Louisa married Charles St. Onge in 1871 assuming Lauer was dead, and he showed up in Ogdensburg (from Oregon) to "collect his wife and kids" in 1894.

I have also found out that Charles St. Onge, Louisa's second husband, was indeed the son of Antoine St. Onge who married his second wife Louisa Depuis Obey (Aubin?) in 1875 in Pierpont, her being a widow and mother of Louis Obey and Louisa Obey. The younger Louisa Obey has an illegitamate child in the 1880 census of Oswegatchie. Charles St. Onge also had brothers Edward (m. Susan Cutway then widow Margaret Lawler) and Henry and a sister named Catherine who went by Kate and was married to Pierre Seguin and went my Peter and Kate Sayers.

I am just posting this message under all of my threads in case it might give leads to anyone researching the French Canadian families in St. Lawrence, NY.

Despite my tons of new info thanks to pension files, and SWORN court affidavits that Louisa Dupuis Wells Tetro Lauer St. Onge (!) WAS born and raised in Ogdensburg, I STILL cannot find her in the 1850 census as Louisa Dupuis, Wells, or Tetro, 1860 with Oliver Lauer, or 1870 as widow Louisa Lower!!

So now I am going to order Oliver Lauer's pension file, even though many of his pertinent docs that gave me info on Louisa were in her file for her second husband Charles St. Onge (because she had a "Special Exam"). The poor woman was determined to be the legal widow of Charles St. Onge because enough people came forward to testify that Lauer had not communicated with her for more than five years, and the law at the time said five years of abandonment is equivalent to death.
