Letter from John O'connor
Rochester
December 10, 1859

Dear Brother

This is with my love and best wishes to you and Mary and the Children and
hopes it may find you all in the enjoyment of good health as it leaves one
and my family at presents we are all happy and comfortable. I thank God that
I left Dublin in 1840. I was sent by an Architect to Newfoundland, me and my
son William to build a Cathedral, the longest in North America but one in
Montreal. I was nine years and seven months at 100 pounds sterling a year.
When I was finished here I sold my house and place and went to the United
States, 1600 miles from St John's, Newfoundland, where I still remain.

I have my wife and six as fine children as there is in the State of New
York. 3 boys and 3 girls. John Joseph the eldest is 17, Mary Anne 16, Sydney
Mary 13, William Henry 10 years, Charley is 7, Agnes the youngest 3 years.

Dear William, this is the finest country in the World. I have never seen a
beggar in America, no one is allowed to beg. The City of Rochester is
allowed by the government 60,000 dollars a year to support the poor.

William is a rich man doing a good business in New York. He and his eldest
Tom spent a week with me last summer. Last week he sent your address. I hope
it is right and that this may come.

I have seen a great deal of the world since I saw you. I left my family in
Newfoundland in 1849 and went to America. I was 17 months travelling and
working along through North and South America. I worked in New Orleans one
month. I had to run from the yellow fever. I thank God that I never had
three days sickness since I left Ireland. I got plently of work and good
wages I get from 14 to 1 1/2 dollars /?? day. My last wife is native of
Newfoundland, we have buried one child in America and has six children
living.

No more at present but remain your,

Affectionate Brother
John O'Connors.
