Subject: [NYMONROE-L] WATKINS in Rochester, 1830

After analyzing the 1830 census information I previously requested (and received quickly -- thank you!), I believe the Watkins family I am looking for may hail from Rochester.

Henry Edward VAN VALIN (b. 1807) m. Sally Ann WATKINS (b. abt. 1815) about 1831. Sally had a sister named Frances J. Watkins who was born March 23, 1830. In the same cemetery plot where Sally Ann is buried with her first and second husbands, there is a tombstone which states "in memory of Abigail Watkins, died August 4, 1861 age 63." I assume this is Sally and Frances' mother. This would probably make Sally Ann the first born child or close to it.

Below are the obituaries of both women, in case these names ring bells for anyone.

"We received word last week, of the death of another old settler and a former resident of [Rochester, Racine Co., WI] -- Mrs. Sallie A. Berry, of Mazomanie, who died at her home in that city last Wednesday. "Aunt Sallie," as she was familiarly known to her intimate friends, was 83 years old, had always enjoyed good health and had been actively engaged in business during her life. She passed away like one who "lies down to pleasant dreams," without sickness or warning, a fitting end to a long and busy career. Funeral services were held at Mazomanie Friday and the body was brought to Honey Creek Saturday and laid beside her husband in the cemetery at that place."
