LOCAL MATTERS

ITEMS IN BRIEF

-- Workmen engaged in cutting a channel through "Goose" Island, just below
the falls, yesterday, found an old safe. It was dug out and the door and back
found to be rusted away. It is thought to have been swept out of the Cotton mill
during the Great flood of 1865.

--There will be a meeting to-morrow evening in the Mayor's office of all
military and civic organizations intending to take part in the KISLINGBURY
funeral. Final arrangements will be made and a fall attendance is requested by
Marshall Daniel A. SHARPE.

--The attractions of Rochester are irrestible,<sic> according to the Lockport
Union. Henry B. KLINGERSCHMIDT(?) of that place, who is well educated and has
lived there thirty years, never saw Rochester until yesterday.

--Last evening Henry GECK, the newly elected president of the Liedertafel,
was formally installed at the society's rooms in Germania hall.

--A son of John GROH of _Henry street, had his hand injured in a cutting
machine yesterday. Dr. SCHUHART attended him.

--The employes of the Rochester Brewing company have their annual picnic at
the Rifle Range to-day.

--Eddie MILLER, while playing on a wagon in Bennett alley yesterday, fell and
fractured his wrist.

--Ex-Superintendent of Police CARTIN of Buffalo was in the city last night
the guest of H. H. WARNER. He left this morning for Albany.

--At the Holy Family church yesterday morning the marriage of Anthony MENSING
and Minnie KELLER was celebrated. A reception was given after the ceremony at
the residence of the groom on Whitney street. The choirs of St. Peter Holy
Family and St. Paul churches and the Waverly quartette were present and sang
several selections. The Leopold Cornet band, of which organization Mr. MENSING is
the leader, serenaded the newly-wedded couple in the evening.

--Miss P. A. HAVILL and Miss Julie HAVILL of Evergreen street, have just
returned home from a five weeks visit to their brother, E. W. HAVILL, of Bath, N.
Y.

--John SMITH, stenographer for the Silsby manufacturing company of Seneca
Falls, is visiting friends in this city.
