Searched vital records today and could find NO death of a James Cottrell or Cotterell, or anything close between 1881 and 1886. Doesn't really mean much, though because the first 10 years or so a lot of vital records weren't turned in. They started in 1880, and are really sparse the first few years.
I think you said you thought Stella died in 1922. Only Stella (M.) Wells I could find who died in 1922 died July 23, 1922 in some town abbreviated as WEBB (I think there is a Webb Falls in Chemung Co.)
I also could not fin either of the marriages. Hope you have better luck than I did. Are you sure she was widowed and not divorced? Wasn't as common as it is today, but it happened on occasion.
