Subject: Obituary Request - John Theobold WATTEL

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if there is someone who could find me an obituary and possibly related news stories for this death.

It is for my great-great-great-grandfather. He was known in Rochester as John Theobold WATTEL. He died, according to church records, on 20 October 1857.

I have just come across a family story - I have no idea if it is true or false - that John was murdered. He was a cooper and sold his wares at the public market. The story states that on the day of his death, he had sold a great many things and had a large sum of money in his pocket. It further states that his remains were found the next morning in the Erie Canal.

If the story proves to be true, I would also be interested in any related stories in the days following his death.

Something that may help: Other spellings of the surname are WATTLE, WADEL, WADDEL, WADDLE. John was originally from Alsace-Lorraine and his first name could have been Jean or Johann.

If one of you is able to help, please contact me off list.

Thank you!
