Subject: [NYNASSAU] 136 Communities in Nassau County
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 12:06:20 EDT

On 09/12/2000 (8:50:21 AM EDT), as part of an eMail, "CURSON, Alfred - Died
Jan. 7, 2000", Ricki Lynn Randall Zunk () asks,

"I know nothing more about this man's death than what the SSDI listing holds
- so I can't pinpoint the town where he lived in Nassau County."

You need to know two things: (1) the community (is it a city, village or
hamlet?) and if it is a village, then does this village keep its own records
or does the town keep the record for this village?

There are 2 cities and 13 towns (as well as 2 Indian reservations) in the
bi-counties and the 13 towns (3 in Nassau and 10 in Suffolk) are further
sub-divided into 95 villages and 195 hamlets, yielding 292 communities (2 +
95 + 195 = 292).

. Nassau Suffolk Total

. cities 2 0 2
. villages 64 31 95
. hamlets 70 125 195

. total 136 156 292

But, bear in mind -- this is IMPORTANT -- the problems caused by
non-conforming postal zones: the name of the community listed in a person's
or place's mailing address is NOT necessarily the community where that person
resided or where that place is located. More than half the addresses in both
counties have a different community listed in their mailing address than the
community where they are actually located.

The collection of Vital Records in New York State begin in 1881, and are
required to be kept by the city or town, as the case may be, in which the
event (birth, death, marriage) occurred and by the state (Albany).

Some of the larger villages do maintain these records, but not all villages
do as they may voluntarily waive their right to do so and make it a
responsibility of the town(s) in which the village is (are) in. If the place
where the event occurred is in a village, the Town Clerk will tell you if the
village or the town maintains the record.

Currently, there are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County (there are no
cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County).

In this regard, please remember that it is very important to know in which
city or town (or village) the event took place and the city or town (or
village) could be different from the city or town (or village) where the
individual may have resided.

On and after January 1, 1899, the eastern two-thirds of Queens County became
Nassau County, and at that time included 3 Towns: North Hempstead, Hempstead
and Oyster Bay. In 1910, Glen Cove incorporated as a city and was made
independent of the Town of Oyster Bay. In 1922, the Village of Long Beach
(incorporated in 1918) was incorporated as a city and made independent of the
Town of Hempstead. (Prior to all of this, on June 15, 1886, the Lloyd's Neck
peninsula was transferred from the Town of Oyster Bay, Queens County to the
Town of Huntington, Suffolk County.)

I'm including after my name the contact information for the 2 cities and 3
towns in Nassau County.

Good luck.
