On 03/23/2001 9:02:51 PM (EST), Bern C () asked,

"Where should I search for death certificates for a person who died in
Lynbrook in 1905 and another person who died in Malverne in 1914?"

Lynbrook is a village (incorporated in 1911) and Malverne is a village
(incorporated in 1921) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County. But, there
are places with either a "Lynbrook, NY" or a "Malverne, NY" mailing address
that are not in the village whose name is in their mailing address. I'll
explain why this is important a bit later in this eMail.

The collection of Vital Records in New York State begin in 1881, and are
required to be kept by the city or town, as the case may be, in which the
event (birth, death, marriage) occurred and by the state (Albany).

Some of the larger villages do maintain these records, but not all villages
do as they may voluntarily waive their right to do so and make it a
responsibility of the town(s) in which the village is (are) in. If the place
where the event occurred is in a village, the Town Clerk will tell you if the
village or the town maintains the record.

Currently, there are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County (there are no
cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County).

In this regard, please remember that it is very important to know in which
city or town (or village) the event took place and the city or town (or
village) could be different from the city or town (or village) where the
individual may have resided.

On and after January 1, 1899, the eastern two-thirds of Queens County became
Nassau County, and at that time included 3 Towns: North Hempstead, Hempstead
and Oyster Bay. In 1910, Glen Cove incorporated as a city and was made
independent of the Town of Oyster Bay. In 1922, the Village of Long Beach
(incorporated in 1918) was incorporated as a city and made independent of the
Town of Hempstead. (Prior to all of this, on June 15, 1886, the Lloyd's Neck
peninsula was transferred from the Town of Oyster Bay, Queens County to the
Town of Huntington, Suffolk County.)

As I wrote, Lynbrook and Malverne are villages in the Town of Hempstead,
Nassau County. However, as I also wrote, the "Lynbrook, NY" and the
"Malverne, NY" postal zones have different borders than do the communities
whose name they use; thus, there are places in the Town of Hempstead that
have either a "Lynbrook" or a "Malverne" mailing address, but are not in
either the Village of Lynbrook nor the Village of Malverne. Secondly, as
both of these villages incorporated after the respective "date" on the death
certificate you are seeking, then the odds suggest that these records would
be with the Town of Hempstead.

Which means you would first want to contact the Town Clerk for the Town of
Hempstead:

Office of the Town Clerk
Town of Hempstead
Town Hall
Hempstead, NY 11550

Tel: 516/489-5000

eMail: ????? (If you do obtain the eMail, please forward same to me.)

I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.
