Barbara,
My dad Ed Collins was raised by his grandparents John A. Wicks and Annie Wicks. Her maden name as told by my dad was Schrodtt. She was born in Baltimore MD and told my dad stories about seeing President Lincoln's Funeral Train going through the station near her home when she was young.
John met Annie when she lived with relatives in Garden City and John was selling crops locally. John Wicks initially owned property on what is now Searingtown Road. The property had a hill where a battle of the French and Indian War took place. It was called Bloddy Hollow Hill.
Tha land now has the existing Herricks High School on it.
They first lived in a Log Cabin and later, John purchased property on Herricks Road that went all the way to Marcus Boulevard in what is now Garden City Park but was then called Outside Mineola (since it was not an incorporated village) for around $500. The first part of the house was built around 1750 and extended in 1850.
My dad lived in the house until 1936 shortly after his grandmother died. He left for the Army and Your grandfather and grandmother got the house. I remember your grandfather Arthur very well and visited him there many times with my dad.
My dad saw Lindbergh fly over the fields several times and went to see him take off from Roosevelt Field. The Wicks Family has a long and honorable history on Long Island. John Wicks was in the audience when Teddy Roosevelt dedicated the County Court House (now called the Old Court House).
John A. Wicks was also a founding member of the "Mineola Fair" one of the greatest country fairs of the day. I could go on forever.
I hope this helps
Michael
