I subsequently read in newsday.com that Garden City Park was developed by Charles C. Denton and a partner in 1872. This would go some ways toward explaining the grid structure in the western part of the hamlet -- 1st St., 2nd Street, 3rd Street, etc, running south to north, with Central Avenue bisecting the hamlet's west end east to west. All very orderly! Denton, of course, was a scion of the wealthy Denton family that had settled in the New Hyde Park/Mineola area decades earlier. He also developed Ozone Park in Queens in 1882 or thereabouts, according to the aforementioned article, available online at lihistory.com.
