Hi Chris,
If your person died within the 5 Boroughs of New York City you might want to check out the following website:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/home.shtml
If you have a Family History Center near your home you might want to check their film list because they have filmed the indexes and records for the 5 Boroughs. I was able to find my relative in the index then found the film that had the actual death certificate filmed.
The Family History Library's website is:
http://www.familysearch.org/
Under the library tab click on their catalog. Do a Place search. Type New York. You then want New York, New York (City). Go to Vital Records Index and you will see the 20 films for the different Boroughs:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titledetails&titleno=108651&disp=Index+to+deaths%2C+New+York+City%2C+1888%20%20&columns=*,0,0
If your relative died outside the 5 Boroughs there is an index at the New York State Library for the rest of New York State.
Their website is at:
http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/genealogy/vitrec.htm
I don't know if they will check their index for you without charging you the whole fee. I did notice on the site that the Rochester Library also has the index. You might be able to find someone who is willing to look at the indexes for you. You might check for Genealogical Societies or Historical Societies in the areas they usually do research at a nominal fee.
Good luck
Kathleen
