JAMES BEDELL (6 Apr 1836 - 12 Apr 1876) of Rockville Centre, Hempstead, Queens, LI, NY, was a sea captain. He died in Santos, Brazil, at the age of 40, leaving his wife, Hester (Danes) Bedell and children, Arlington and Minnie and perhaps others. I have found his death notice in the "Hempstead Inquirer" of Friday, 2 Jun 1876, p. 2, column 4. It reads as follows:
TERRIBLE NEWS -- News reached this place on Monday, that Capt. James Bedell, who sailed for South America some time ago, died there in the hospital on the 12th of April. On April 7th, Mr. Bedell's 40th birthday, he was perfectly well, and wrote a letter to his wife. Five days afterward he was cold in death. The entire community of Rockville Centre sympathizes most deeply with Mrs. Bedell. Mr. Bedell died of yellow fever. -- Pearsal's Once a Week.
If anyone knows more of Capt. Bedell's ship and sea-going experiences, I would appreciate your sharing of this information.
