Subject: HOW TO FIND AVENUE NUMBERS IN MANHATTAN
Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 17:09:40 EST

-Hello Listers:

The following posting was on my NYC-ROOTS digest. I recently found the
following on a handout I received from a printer *many* years ago (there is
no zip code on the printer's address). I think that it is still valid.

To find what street is nearest:
Take the number, CANCEL LAST FIGURE AND DEVIDE BALACE BY 2. THEN
ADD THE KEY NUMBER BELOW. The result will be the nearest street.

For Avenues A, B, C and D add 3
For First and Second Aves. add 3
For Third Ave. add 9 or 10
For Park Ave. So. add 8
For Fifth Avenue to Central Park add 17 or 18
For Sixth Avenue subtract 12 or 13
For Seventh Avenue add 12
For Eighth Avenue add 9 or 10
For Ninth Avenue add 13
For Tenth Avenue add 14
For Eleventh Avenue add 15
For Madison Avenue add 26
For Lexington Avenue add 22
For Columbus, Amsterdam, or West End Avenues add 59 or 60
For Broadway above 23 St. subtract 30 or 31
For Central Park West divide house number by 10 then add 60
For Riverside Drive divide house number by 10 then add 72

I did use this when I was working and it did work.I know it doesn't answer
all your questions but I hope it will be of some help.

Could someone kindly tell me where Third Ave starts and ends in
Manhatten and approximatly where 355 Third Ave and 766 Third Ave would
be located by Street number.
And what street(s) would cross the 400-500 blocks of 2nd Ave
I know the 2nd Ave "el" was torn down many many years ago, and think so
was the 3rd Ave El-so what train/subway takes/took care of that
transportation then? And is there still an El in the Bronx? Seems to me
I could take the train (3rd Ave line) to some places in the Bronx, or
is my memory mixed up with another train/subway?
Thank you.

Pat
