Subject: Commodore Hotel in NYC
Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2005 16:48:25 EST
On 2/1/05 (2:09:46 PM MST), as part of a posting to ,
Trish () asked,
"I just found out that two ot the ten women I have been researching for the
past 25 years were living in NYC. In searcing Google for the address, 141 E.
44th Street, I found Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel at that address. On eBay,
I came up with the Commodore Hotel next to Grand Central Station. When I
Googled for the Commodore, I came up with that address. I am assuming that this
is the same hotel, only refurbished and renamed?"
The Donald (Donald Trump) turned the Commodore into the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
In 1974 Trump obtained an option on one of the Penn Central's hotels, the
Commodore, which was unprofitable but in an excellent location adjacent to Grand
Central Terminal. The next year he signed a partnership agreement with the
Hyatt Hotel Corporation, which did not have a large downtown hotel. Trump then
worked out a complex deal with the city to win a 40-year tax abatement, arranged
financing, and then completely renovated the building, constructing a
striking new facade of reflective glass designed by architect Der Scutt. When the
hotel, renamed the Grand Hyatt, opened in 1980, it was popular and an economic
success, making Trump the city's best known and most controversial developer.
