Robin,

I'll help you help yourself. Go to: http://www.stevemorse.org/census/index.html

Choose New York, Manhattan, and enter E 58th. If you enter 428 in the map link, you will see it is on a block that contains E 58th, 1st Ave, E 57th, and Sutton Pl (current map). You should come up then, after entering those streets in the utility, with an 1930 ED (31-###). The utility then has a link for the possible 1920 EDs.

In your case you will find that there are *4* different 1920 EDs that cover the 1930 ED. But at least the utility narrows it down to those 4. You would have to search through each for your specific address.

If you need help in working through the utility, email me off-list. I did the transcription for Manhattan for this database, and can help you learn how to use it, if you need the extra help.

Good luck with your research.

Joel Weintraub

Note: There is a person who has aggressively posted to me off-board their unhappiness with the way I answer these requests. I understand from doing a Google search on this person that he has a reputation of doing this on the New York boards, and occasionally such behavior is discussed online. If the moderator feels my answers are inappropriate, they should tell me and I'll stop answering such requests. If not, I'll continue to teach, through this board, how to master geographical searches using free online utilities....but will usually not give posters the answer outright (for 1910-1930 queries).
