That is just where he applied and was issued his SSN. But that does not mean that he did not also die there. But he could have moved away and died somewhere else.
Now SSN has a form you need to get, it is the form to apply for a person who is kin to you, for a copy of their org. SSN application form that they filled out in order to get the SSN card. This application will tell you other helpful information on this person. But you have to get the form from SSN that is the only way.
Are you in the US? If so just visit any SSN office and request the form. Fill it out and apply for the copy.
If they give you a hard time with him being your Great Uncle see if you can get the help of a closer to him relative to help you apply to get the copy.
Hope this helps you out some, sorry I can't remember the name of the form that you need to do this. Perhaps someone else will remember the name.
