Hi--
I don't know where to start looking! My grandfather, Henry Welfel was born in NYC (not specific as to borough) in 1906. He had several siblings, older sister Mary, and brothers John and James, and perhaps another brother and sister. I do not know his parents names. Supposedly the parents were German immigrants. They were Catholic. When Henry was a youngster the parents were killed in a car accident (?). Mary placed her younger siblings in an orphanage (1910-1920 would be the approx time they were in the orphanage, I am guessing.) I would like to know the names of my G-grandparents and where they lived. We also don't know what became of Mary. Henry moved to central NY as an adult, John and James moved to Bergen Co., NJ. There is also some name confusion. My grandfather said the family name was Wolf(e) before he was placed in the orphanage. They may have Americanized the name from Woelfel when they immigrated, but in the orphanage perhaps they used the original name (possibly !
misspelled). Are there any city directories online where I might look for this family? What about German Catholic orphanages or just Catholic orphanages during that period. I live many hours away from NYC and online sources are a great help. Thanks--
Kathy Miller
