Hi Carol,
Re Joseph Wandling.
Joseph died April 19,1881 and was buried April 22, 1881 in Calvary cemetery, Queens county, NYC, NY. His death certificate indicates that he had lived in the USA 52 years. His country of origin is listed as Germany. He died at 448 Cherry Street--same address as the 1880 census.
The "Lena" Harrigan listed above Joseph, on line #10 is Josephs' daughter and my GGGrand-Mother. She died in 1912 and her mother is listed on her death certificate as Mary Hartman who came from Germany. Her death certificate list her as Madeline.(Madeline Wandling Harrigan)
I have not been able to discover Mary Hartman Wandlings' death certificate etc. Joseph Wandling was naturalized on April 11, 1838 in the Marine Court of NYC The #on the card is as follows W 534----Volume 18--copy of record 510. His former nationality is listed as French. A witness is listed--Lewis DeForest, NYC. Joseph Wandling is listed in the 1860 census as Wandlin_, Mary 44yrs and 4kids Joseph 21, Charles17, Christenia 13 and Lena 9, all kids b NYC. Parents b. in France. In 1870 the family is listed in the census and the supplementry census. Their country of origin was listed as France on one and Bavaria on the other. All census addresses are for Cherry Street in NYC. It appears that Joseph and family moved along as the street itself grew. I don't believe that I have any more information for you at this time--but I'm still plugging away. Before my Aunt Madeline passed away she had stated that this family had come from Alsace-Lorraine. If you could give me some in!
formation regarding the Wandling/Hartman origins in Europe I would greatly appreciate it. It seems I have hit my "Brick Wall" on my Fathers' side--Ireland. And, I would like to follow-up on my German connections.
Hope to hear from you soon---John Harrigan
