Subject: DYAS - 1900 - name of neighborhood?
Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2005 20:16:28 EST

Hello,
My DYAS ancestors lived at:

2253 First Avenue (New York City) in 1897
and
371 East 117 Street (New York City) in 1900

I don't know much about New York, and I would like to find photos of those
locations. Would anybody happen to know some online sources for photos from
this time frame? I've searched for hours on sites like Library of
Congress/American Memory and Google, etc. but can't seem to find anything helpful. I'm just
curious to see what the houses looked like where they lived.

Also, would anybody know the actual name of the neighborhood for these two
locations, which intersect? Is that East Harlem?

My grandfather was baptised at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in
1897, at 449 East 115 Street, which isn't far from where they lived. A web site I
found for that church said that during that time frame, much of the
congregation was Italian, and I got the impression that the neighborhood was called
"Little Italy." I get confused on all the different "Harlems."

My great-grandparents were also born in NYC (but I haven't found them on a
census yet) but their parents came from Ireland. I found some of this
information today by looking at the 1900 Federal census.

The names I am researching are: DYAS, FLANAGAN

Thanks!

Peggy Dyas
