I have exhausted most of what I can find in the way of birth, death and marriage records at the Municipal Archives. I figure my next step is to try the Catholic churches, but I'm not sure how to proceed. I am not searching for just one or two ancestors, for the family line overlaps quite a bit with intermarriages. I need to find dates that I am currently NOT aware of, such as death dates that could fall within a space of twenty years. Am I correct in assuming that churches will permit only queries with specific names and dates, and that civilians are not allowed any kind of access to records?
My ancestors lived in and around the Five Points, and I would probably be looking at St. Andrew's, Transfiguration, and Most Precious Blood, as well as St. Anthony of Padua on Houston St.
Would anyone be willing to share their experiences getting records from any of these churches, or the Catholic Church in general?
Thanks,
:-) Christy
