On 6/11/05 (10:32:31 AM MDT), as part of a posting to
, Kathleen O'Donnell Grone () asked these two questions,
"Where exactly is "Hell's Kitchen"?"
"What kind of Neighborhood was Flatbush?"
First, regarding Hell's Kitchen: Hell's Kitchen was/is a neighborhood in the
west part of the middle of the Island of Manhattan.
For a map showing the neighborhoods in the Borough of Manhattan (coterminous
with New York County):

Second, regarding Flatbush: Flatbush is a neighborhood in the center of the
Borough of Brooklyn.
For a map showing the neighborhoods in the Borough of Brooklyn (coterminous
with Kings County):

Prior to January 1, 1894, Flatbush was a hamlet (unincorporated area) in the
Town of Flatbush (the Town of Flatbush, one of the original 6 towns of Kings
County, included the hamlets of Pig Town, East Flatbush and Midwood, as well as
Flatbush) in the center of Kings County. On January 1, 1894, the Town of
Flatbush was annexed into the City of Brooklyn, and remained part of the City of
Brooklyn until January 1, 1898, when the City of Brooklyn was annexed into the
City of New York.
Circa the late 1800s and early 1900s, Flatbush was a poor/depressed area. It
is from Flatbush that the colorful Brooklyn accent bubbled up.
I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.

Walter Greenspan
