On 6/11/05 (1:35:31 PM MDT), as part of a posting to
, Kathleen O'Donnell Grone () asked,
"I also found Whitehall St on a map, it is very near the Staten Island Ferry.
I take it that is NYC Manhatten area. Do you know what kind of area it was?
Or a knickname for the area? 37 Whitehall Street was where Michael and Mary
lived when Michael got his Naturalization Papers in October 1868."
Whitehall Street is not in the White Hall neighborhood, but rather runs
"north to south" from Beaver Street to the East River within in the Southern Tip
neighborhood of Manhattan. Circa 1868, I figure both neighborhoods -- Sotuhern
Tip and white Hall -- were both involved with the sailing ship industry.
For a map showing the neighborhoods in the Borough of Manhattan (coterminous
with New York County):

During the Viet Nam era, the draft board for New York County -- the infamous
one from the movie, "Alice's Restaurant" -- was located at 39 Whitehall Street.
I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.

Walter Greenspan
