Whenever I have found re-marriages amoung my ancestors I have always assumed that it was because the previous spouse died. There is one or two cirmcumstances that I cannot find records of the spouses death so I am beginning to think that maybe a divorce happened instead of death.

Where does one look for/research divorce records in the NYC area? I have plently of experience researching death/marriage/birth records, but have never looked into a divorce. Also having trouble finding any marriage certificates on one of these ancestors (Phillip Steele b. NY 1876), but all other evidence tells me that this person was married 2 times (census data) prior to marrying for the 3rd and final time (to make the marriage that produced my husband's mother).
