The Dutch Hoogh Straat became Duke Street sometime after the English
takeover in 1664 (presumably named after the Duke of York for whom the
city was also renamed).
After the American Revolution, almost all NYC streets with royal names
were rechristened. Since the road on the opposite side of Broad Street
had always been known as Stone or Stony Street, Duke Street took its
name, too. (Stone Street was the first paved street in New Amsterdam).
Best wishes,
James
