U.S. armed forces were not integrated until so ordered by President
Truman in the late 1940s. During World War I, blacks were restricted to
support duty; with a few exceptions, they were not allowed to serve in
combat positions. Apparently draft officials felt the need to easily
distinguish the draft registration cards of blacks from those of
whites. Ergo, the cut corner.
